Kaizen Events - What Value Do They Bring to a Company?

HiDEC members heard two very interesting points of view regarding the effectiveness of holding kaizen events (a focused, intense, short-term project to improve a process). Toni Doolen, assistant professor of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Oregon State University presented her findings on the effectiveness of kaizen events. Toni has studied companies to learn what makes an effective event and how best to implement changes caused by events. Her study results provoked deep discussion from all participants. Greg Hastings, Director of Quality Assurance at Precise Flight in Bend said "Toni Doolen's research has produced results that is counter to traditional Kaizen teachings. She brings a perspective that gives balance to and contrast between short-term results verses long-term cultural gains." Roger Aubert, Director of Manufacturing at Triad Speakers, Inc. in Portland spoke to the group about his experience with "kaizen in the trenches". Roger has a lengthy and diverse background in manufacturing and is a seasoned practitioner of lean implementation and practice.
